Hip-Hop Reggae Showdown at ‘Best of the Best’

It’s proven that hip-hop originated from rap, which was spawned from dub, which is the stepchild of reggae, whose current offspring is dancehall. It’s also a fact that no other music event in North America showcases reggae and hip-hop like BEST OF THE BEST. The international music festival, billed as the “Best Caribbean Show in North America,” will be fusing Caribbean and mainstream urban flavors on Sunday, May 24th at Bicentennial Park in Miami, Florida.

Reggae and its offshoot hip-hop have seen no bigger stage than BEST OF THE BEST, presented by Miami-based premier promotions company, JBJ Entertainment. With a lineup that includes Rick Ross, who currently has the #1 hip-hop album this week on Billboard (Deeper Than Rap), and the top dancehall, reggae and soca acts from the Caribbean, BEST OF THE BEST is definitely delivering its promise of bringing you the top artists in this ultimate showdown of these genres.

“Hip-hop lovers love reggae and reggae lovers love hip-hop,” states DJ Khaled, president of Def Jam South and a featured artist on this year’s bill. “It’s the best of the best – the best of both worlds. The energy of both genres is just amazing.”

Rick Ross also appreciates the reggae genre, so much so that he has signed a Jamaican dancehall artist called Magazeen to his Mayback Music Group. Magazeen is also featured on his new album, on the reggae-tinged “Yatch Club,” and on BEST OF THE BEST alongside Ross.

“When it comes to reggae, I’m a huge fan of it and I’m very selective of the artists that I choose to get caught up with,” discloses Ross. “My first encounter with reggae was Bob Marley so I try to stay in that realm with artists like Capleton, Sizzla and Mavado, and that’s exactly what BEST OF THE BEST is. When I first heard the lineup, I was going to come and jump out and surprise everyone but we made it official.”

Dancehall star Elephant Man is the only Caribbean artist signed to a major hip-hop label. Inking a deal with Bad Boy, his latest album is a potpourri of dancehall and hip-hop, the same formula for BEST OF THE BEST. “I love hip-hop because it reminds me of reggae,” reveals Elephant Man. “The beats and the flow we use in reggae dancehall are the same beats and flow they use in hip-hop. The baseline patterns and grooves are the same, so I love it just like I love dancehall – same way, no difference.”

In addition to Rick Ross, DJ Khaled and Elephant Man, the show will be hosted by T-Pain and features a star-studded bill that includes Jeezy, Beenie Man, Mavado, Bounty Killer, Serani, Wayne Wonder, Capleton, Destra, Tony Matterhorn, Spice, Kip Rich, Flippa Mafia, Christopher Martin, Cocoa Tea, Ras Penco, Ce’Cile and The Stones.

VIBE, TEMPO, TRACE, ALLHIPHOP.com, 24hourhiphop.com and Outaroad.com have been added as media partners for the show, which takes place at Bicentennial Park, located at 1075 Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami. Park gates open at 1:00 pm and show time is set for 1:30pm sharp. The 10-hour event does not end there. Everyone is invited to the official Best of the Best After Party, at Bongos Nightclub (located behind the American Airlines Arena), immediately following the show.

Ras Penco Hits #1 With New Single

Reggae artist Ras Penco scores his first number one hit in Jamaica with the romantic ballad, “Thousand Miles,” a poignant promise mimicking his life as a traveling musician far and wide, who vows to never break his loyalty to his true love.

The Uprize Music artist humbly welcomes his very first berth at the top of the reggae singles chart (Jamaica Weekly Countdown). “It’s a good feeling. I’ve been trying to get here for quite a while, about six years, and it took a lot of hard work.”

“Thousand Miles” has been gaining momentum on the airwaves in Jamaica for over two months, as quality music recently garnered its fair share of airplay amidst a ban on “indecent” dancehall and soca music on the nation’s airwaves. This made room for quality and positive music such as Ras Penco’s, catapulting him into the limelight. The ensuing video lit up television sets and has also enjoyed rotation, much to the delight of reggae lovers. “I wrote it and from the moment I finished recording it in the studio, I knew it was a great song and that people would love it.”

Ras Penco is receiving the adulation from fans firsthand. He recently starred on RE-TV’s High School Tour, taking his sounds into the schools around Jamaica. “I’ve been getting crazy love from fans. The song has touched them.”

He journeys to Miami next month for the Best of the Best concert, which highlights Caribbean and hip-hop acts at the top of their game. In fact, Ras Penco is only one of two reggae artists booked for the show, and will be sharing the stage with the likes of Rick Ross and T-Pain. “It’s a great feeling to be on the show,” reveals Ras Penco. “The line-up is mostly dancehall and hip-hp artists, so it’s special to be included.”

The 2009 IRAWMA saw a star-studded affair at the York College Performing Arts Center in Queens, New York on Sunday, May 3, 2009. – Photography by Khayyam Pitts - Rainy weather and cold temps did not put a damper on the 28th Annual International Reggae and World Music Awards, which took place at the state-of-the-art York College Performing Arts Center in Queens, New York on Sunday, May 3, 2009. Celebrities filed into the venue hours before the show began, to walk the red carpet and give media their undivided attention. Then the curtains went up and the show was first emceed by Copeland Forbes, pinch hitting for Tony Rebel, who later turned up to take over his hosting duties. The audience was entertained all night with exciting performances from some of the top names in Caribbean music, including Tarrus Riley, Calypso Rose, Beenie Man, Machel Montano, Alison Hinds,Tony Rebel, D’Angel, Gramps Morgan, Duane Stephenson and Barbee, all backed by the Dean Fraser Band. The awards presentation saw some funny moments as fans screamed their choices and awardees teased each other. Beres Hammond, Mavado, Machel Montano, Queen Ifrica and Etana all walked away with two trophies each. Highlanda Added To Rum Punch Fridays Lineup

Join the Soul Rebel Movement every 3rd Friday as we end the work week in style and start the weekend off right. Minglez is definitely the place to be on Friday May 15th if you plan to enjoy yourself dancing, drinking, listening to good music, socializing with friends, and mingling with new faces.
