“Reggae Losing Its Roots” – Burning Spear
According to a recent interview with Burning Spear, he states that Reggae is losing its roots and if we ever expect the music to return to its glory days the producers need to know that the music needs direction!
He realizes that young producers turned the once organic sound of reggae to an artificial beat by using equipments that mimic the sounds of an authentic band.
Spear also states that he feels it is difficult but imperative for Jamaica to build a national recording studio that offers budding producers and musicians an opportunity while encouraging them to record music the traditional way.

Reggae sensation Ras Penco is making the rounds on local and international airwaves, as his hit single “Thousand Miles” has been garnering airplay on radio and television throughout the Caribbean and North America. The single went to #1 in Jamaica in April, is currently #2 in the Cayman Islands, and the video has been in regular rotation on BETJ and VH1 Soul ever since.
Now as the summer concert circuit heats up, Penco will be taking centerstage at Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay, Jamaica on Friday, July 24. Billed as “International Night,” Penco will be sharing the stage with the likes of Ne-Yo, Keri Hilson and Jazmine Sullivan. Sumfest is touted as the best reggae show on Earth and Penco is one of the few reggae artists that will be bringing its authentic sounds to the thousands of international tourists who journey to Sumfest each year.
“It’s a great accomplishment for me to be performing for the first time at Reggae Sumfest,” states Penco. “Sharing the stage with Ne-Yo on ‘International Night’ and representing reggae music on that line-up and that stage is a big step for me.”
Back with his new single “Most High,” Penco composes a more cultural theme than the romantic “Thousand Miles,” in a timeless conscious tune that laments the guidance and protection offered by the Rastafari faith. The single is already climbing the charts and finding fans in reggae aficionados everywhere. “It’s a prayer for me now to further my career and for Jah to guide me along my journey,” reveals Penco. “It’s doing well in Jamaica, as well as the U.K. and Canada and I’m looking forward to performing for my fans there soon.”
With two consecutive hit singles, Ras Penco is tapped to be the future of reggae music and someone reggae fans can count on to deliver solid songs that define the soulful genre. Stay updated with artist news and tour information by logging on to www.myspace.com/raspenco.

Hi everyone, I posted a new episode to the Highlanda Sounds 1990s Dancehall Podcast.
Please click HERE to view it.
See you there!
- Highlanda
The 90s was a time in dancehall when songs had one-word titles like “Memories” by Beenie Man, “Suspense” by Bounty Killer and “Badmind” by Capleton. Singer Wayne Wonder made his mark on the dancehall world, voicing hit tunes in a prolific manner on many an uptempo riddim. This was a time when the sound clash business was at its apex with the leading artist being Mr. Rodney Price, also known as The Warlord, or Poor People’s Governor, or more popularly as BOUNTY KILLER. All you had to do be the best DJ/sound system, especially in Brooklyn where I was at the time, was play the most Bounty – it was that simple.
